Melody's Basketball Story
It
started out when I was in the 8th grade. I wanted to play basketball,
and I could see myself just running up and down the court area like
every-body else. I could just see myself playing basketball. I went
to the coach that was over the ball team and asked him. I said, “Hey,
I want to play basketball. I see you got a sign where it says any girls
that want to play basketball, sign up.” And he looked at me real
funny, and he said “Well, are you sure?” “Yeah, I
said, “it’s
one of my dreams”. He said, “I’m scared if they throw
that ball and it hits your head, “that ball may
hurt your head.” I’m like, “Yeah, but that’s
not going to stop me is it?” And he goes, “I don’t
think so. I don’t think you’ll be able to play.” So
I went home and told my grandmother. I said “Grandmother,
I’m going to play basketball.” And she
said “No, I don’t think basketball is what you should do.” I’m
like, come on now, this is what I want to do. NO. As a teenager and a
kid in high school, everyone said “no.” When
I came here, I was able to say after six years my girls’ basketball
team came in second place!
